JANUS buyer’s guide

Evaluating an IBM CMOD alternative?
Start with your report requirements.

Updated 1 October 2026

If IBM Content Manager OnDemand is part of your current environment, an evaluation should begin with the reports and services your business depends on.

Can JANUS be evaluated as an IBM CMOD alternative? Yes, for enterprise report repository, discovery, distribution, and records-governance requirements. Suitability for your archive depends on source exports, document formats, metadata, entitlements, and pilot results. A ready-made migration connector or feature-for-feature equivalence is not established by this guide.

Recognize the existing product’s role

IBM describes Content Manager OnDemand as a solution for capturing and storing documents with archive, search, and retrieval capabilities, including outbound statements and correspondence. It lists on-premises and IBM Cloud deployment options. Source: IBM Content Manager OnDemand.

Evaluate the workload, not just the category

Report discoveryRepository organization and search using document details.Correct results for representative searches and historical periods.

Before planning an IBM Content Manager OnDemand migration

  1. Inventory the archive. Identify the deployed product version, report families, formats, historical periods, metadata fields, volumes, and current consumers.
  2. Agree on extraction responsibilities. Establish which supported export methods are available and who is authorized to provide records. Confirm associated resources and metadata; a displayed PDF may not represent everything needed to preserve a source record.
  3. Define reconciliation. Agree on how record counts, time ranges, readability, and selected attributes will be compared.
  4. Validate permissions and holds. Treat access and lifecycle requirements as acceptance criteria, not later cleanup.
  5. Plan a reversible pilot. Keep the current service available while evaluating a bounded set of reports. Agree on rollback, cutover responsibilities, and acceptance sign-off before expansion.

Questions for the business case

Assess current-product and JANUS costs from actual proposals. Avoid assuming that a change will be cheaper or faster before scope and evidence are available.
